My response to the debate in Buncombe Co., NC over Bibles handed out in school & the subsequent protest by a pagan witch - this was posted on the Weaverville newspaper website regarding articles about the revisions to policy over religious materials & practices in schools -
I don’t believe that the policy changes are telling anyone that they have to hide their beliefs - just that they cannot teach or promote their beliefs as the only true religion to the students. The Constitution of this country was written by Deists & the majority of signers were Deists. They believed that a Creator made the earth & then let it go. They did their best to ensure that anyone coming to this country would be able to worship as they desired, not as the majority ruled. The 1796 Treaty of Tripoli, ratified by President John Adams, one of the writers of the Constitution states: “Art. 11. As the Government of the United States of America is not, in any sense, founded on the Christian religion - “ That is why a government funded entity cannot promote one religion over another. They CANNOT make children who believe something other than Christianity feel uncomfortable for their beliefs. They CANNOT set up situations where those children could be bullied if they do not follow the status quo. Those actions- conscious or subconscious - are illegal & unconstitutional. And as Christianity is the majority religion in this country at this time, you complaining about your rights being taken away is laughable, especially when those of us with minority belief systems do not seem to have any rights at all.
I come from a very conservative Presbyterian background - my father is actually a minister. For most of my life I did my best to be exactly what everyone was telling me to be as a Christian. And I succeeded quite well, according to those who seemed to know. But the history of the Church always bothered me - the incessant need to conquer, overthrow & kill any one that disagreed with them. And I see that same mindset here. Once again, Christians feel like they have the right to conquer & overthrow those that deviate from their oh-so-considered & studied beliefs - that lemming mindset that causes them to follow everyone else off the cliff without stopping to think for themselves. Maybe if they stopped to think for a minute they would see that letting others believe as they choose is no threat to their own beliefs. If Christians truly believe their God is omnipotent, omniscient & omnipresent, then why are they so worried about a few Pagans trying to enforce the law of the land? Do you not believe that your God wins anyway?
My Pagan belief system gives me more comfort, security, confidence & strength than Christianity seems to give you, since you seem to have to be so virulent to defend it. Ginger is not defending her faith, she is just making sure that her children have the chance to go to a government funded school with the knowledge that they will not be ostracized or bullied by their teachers & peers. Should not every child have the right to attend an institution of learning in peace and safety, regardless of their family’s beliefs? Should not every child have the right to speak of their faith or see books pertaining to their faith in the school library? You are demanding that for your children. Where is the harm in Ginger asking that for her own?

ReplyDeleteMy husband has been encouraging me to go back to church but I have never been comfortable going to a Christian church. I was introduced to Wiccan about 10 years ago after growing up in a Southern Baptist home. The church I went to did not belong to the Southern Baptist Convention but I never felt accepted there. I felt accepted among the other Wiccans. After reading your blog post, I know how to approach my husband & have an informed discussion about this. Thank you!

Glad to be of help!
ReplyDeleteI'm a conservative, evangelical Christian and I think your response is very balanced. I am SO sorry that many of you have not felt loved & accepted by other Christians. The Bible says Jesus is the only way but it also says we are to love people & not judge. I wish you were all my neighbors. I'd love you.
